MEET YOUR HEALTH COACH

Chelsey BurnsWHY I BECAME A HEALTH COACH:

I am walking, living proof of the power of health coaching. Two years ago, I was diagnosed with Primary Immune Deficiency Syndrome, and I almost died from a staph infection that my stress-ravaged immune system was too weak to overcome. For me, working with a health coach not only changed my life, it saved my life.

Unfortunately, my story is not unique: so many people live their lives like I did under a constant state of stress without realizing the damage we are doing to our bodies until it is too late. I was quite familiar with the phrase "stress kills" but I did not think it applied to me--I thought I was invincible! I was an obsessive over-achiever, a habitual under-sleeper, a junk food addict, and an unabashed workaholic. I sacrificed my health repeatedly to achieve external measures of success (high school Valedictorian, Fulbright Scholar, top-tier law school, partner at a law firm before age 40). Eventually this abuse caused my immune system and adrenal glands to shut down.

Two years ago I became septic in the hospital and almost died from a staph infection that I had acquired during a routine sinus surgery. The army of specialists I was seeing gave me a word-jumble of diagnoses: Primary Immune Deficiency Syndrome, hypogammaglobulonemia, adrenal insufficiency, Natural Killer Cell Deficiency, and fibromyalgia. My doctors prescribed eight different prescription medications and twice-monthly IVIg (antibody) infusions. After seven months of this treatment, I continued to have frequent infections and hospitalizations; it became clear I could no longer work; and I was forced to quit my job. My doctors said my immune system was permanently damaged—that my condition was chronic—and I should apply for disability. In a letter to my insurance company, my doctor wrote that she feared I would not survive the next infection.

Fortunately, inspiration struck me just as I hit this lowest point, and I decided it was time to take my life into my own hands; it was time to heal myself. I refused to apply for disability and I refused to see myself as broken. With the help of my health coach, I was able to reboot my immune system. I made significant nutritional changes, letting food be my medicine. I also began a rigorous self-care regimen and mindfulness practice that I continue today. Because I was seeing such amazing results from the nutritional changes, self-care, and mindfulness, I decided to wean off of all the prescription medications and infusions, a process which, amazingly, only took three months. I have been pharma-free since November 15, 2015! It was then that I knew I had to share the knowledge I had gained through my experience with as many people as possible, so I enrolled in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition to become a health coach.

MY CREDENTIALS:

While I did obtain my health coaching certificate from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) in November 2016 and my Creatively Fit Coaching certificate in January 2017, my training to become a health coach started many years earlier. As a pre-med student at the University of Denver, I obtained my degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry in 1996 (I also obtained a degree in German and Political Science). Upon my graduation from undergrad, I was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship, and I enrolled in the medical school at the University of Heidelberg in Germany where I studied immunology and comparative health policy. After my year as a Fulbright Scholar, I decided my life’s path was not leading me to medical school, but rather I was pulled in the direction of health policy. As a student at Vanderbilt University Law School, I concentrated on public interest law and worked at a nonprofit organization in the field of health policy. My first job out of law school was at a disability rights center in Richmond, California, where I represented primarily homeless veterans and other marginalized members of society. When I moved to Colorado so that my husband could attend law school, my career path took a turn toward the for-profit law firm sector where I worked as a commercial trial attorney for seven years. When I experienced a health crisis in 2014, my career path took another turn—for the next year, my full-time job was getting healthy. When I had to fill out forms that asked for my occupation, I wrote, “getting healthy.” Once I had accomplished that goal, I enrolled in IIN so that I could share everything I had learned on my own healing journey and in school with as many people as possible.
