Frequently Asked Questions

What is a health coach? This is a common question because health coaches are a relatively new phenomenon in the health and fitness world.  A health coach is like a personal trainer for the whole person--mind, body, and spirit. For the technical definition, I refer you to the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, where I received my health coaching certificate, which defines a health coach as: “A Health Coach is a wellness authority and supportive mentor who motivates individuals to cultivate positive health choices. Health Coaches educate and support clients to achieve their health goals through lifestyle and behavior adjustments. Proper health coach training programs and health coach certification ensure that Health Coaches know how to work with diverse groups of people and equips them with the tools necessary to best fit the needs of their clients.”

Why do I need to hire a health coach when I already know what I need to do to get healthy? Because, let’s face it, even when we know what we need to do to improve our health, we have a hard time doing it. There’s knowing and then there is doing. It’s hard to hold ourselves accountable, but when you work with someone who is encouraging you and helping you stay on track, you are much more likely to stick with your program and reach your goals.

Why do I need a health coach when I already have a doctor? Don’t get me wrong, doctors are amazing and let’s not discount the miracles of modern medicine! However, your doctor doesn’t always have time to talk to you about nutrition, lifestyle, and stress reduction. A doctor’s job ends once s/he comes up with a diagnosis and prescribes a treatment (usually a pill).  A health coach can fill in the gap and even teach you preventative measures so that you spend less time at the doctor’s office and more time enjoying life.

Can’t I learn everything I need to know about health and nutrition on the internet? It’s true, with just a few keystrokes, we can access an incredible amount of information on the Internet about nutrition and health, but it’s not about information, it’s about transformation. We’ve all been there—we suddenly find ourselves going down that rabbit hole on the Internet, reading for hours about the latest treatments for a particular diagnosis or currently trending diet and exercise plans. But, there’s reading and then there’s doing. Sometimes you just need a little boost to get started; a bit of guidance each step of the way. This is where a health coach comes in. As your health coach, I help you sift through the immense amount of information available and determine what fits your bio-individualized needs.

What is Mindfulness? Why is your company called Mindful Health Coaching? The word “mindfulness” is an umbrella term that encompasses a wide variety of techniques that help the brain switch out of autopilot and into the present mode. You know how you can drive all the way home from work and realize that you don’t remember anything about the drive? Heck, you may not even remember starting your car! That’s being on autopilot. The goal of mindfulness is to get your brain off autopilot and into the here-and-now, because the present mode is where all healing and transformation occurs. This involves breaking habits by rewiring your brain’s circuitry and creating new behavioral patterns that benefit you. There are a number of techniques that can assist with this process, often referred to as mindfulness practices. The most common type of mindfulness practice is meditation. Everyone is familiar with meditation—the image of a person sitting cross-legged, eyes-closed, chanting OM comes to mind—but that’s just one type of mindfulness practice.  There are many other mindfulness practices that have proven highly effective for improving your health, and I am excited to teach them to you!

If I work with you, will you put me on any particular diet? No. If your goal is weight loss, it is important to know that my approach is not about calorie-counting or restrictive food lists. It’s about figuring out what works for your body. To put it simply: diets don’t work. Sure, they may work for a short time—you lose the pounds, feel great, get lots of compliments, but what happens as time goes on? You gain the weight back. Studies have shown that 95% of people who lose weight on a diet gain it all back, and then some.  While I studied over 100 different dietary theories at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (and I have probably tried half of them in my lifetime!), we now know that there is no one-size-fits-all diet; each person has individualized nutritional needs and a unique metabolism. That is why I adhere to the concept of bio-individuality ™ and why I will work with you to determine precisely what your body needs to reach your healthiest weight.

Are your services covered by insurance? I do not take insurance as I am not part of any health insurance network. However, you may inquire with your carrier to see if health coaching is a covered benefit, and if it is, I will cooperate to provide you with whatever information you need to file a claim for reimbursement. There is hope that in the future health coaching will be regularly covered by health insurance; more and more doctors are now pushing for it since they have seen how much it helps their patients

What is the time commitment? It varies depending on the program you choose. Because I adhere to the concept of bio-individuality, I believe that there is no one-size-fits all health coaching program that works for everyone. Therefore, I will work with you to customize a program that works for your lifestyle and schedule. Generally, we will meet once a week week for one hour for a total of 10 sessions; however, the frequency and number of sessions can vary depending on your needs. In addition to the time when we are in session, you will need to set aside about 30-60 minutes a day to work on your action steps for that week.  Believe me, you will come to love that time!

How long does it take to see results? It all depends on your goals and abilities (time, energy, resources). I will pace the program to fit your needs and abilities. My programs evolve with the client; nothing is pre-set.  While I do have a certain body of information to share with you, I don’t have previously formulated “lesson plans” or a static one-size-fits-all program. I create the agendas for each session individually, after the preceding session, so that I can customize it to fit where you are in the program and how far you are progressing with your action steps.  That way, we keep a reasonable pace: you won’t feel like you are falling behind, but at the same time, I will ensure that you continue to progress forward toward your goals. Like any coach, I will provide you with prompts and guidelines (I’ll give you the “play book”), but I won’t run the plays for you. If I see you are struggling with a certain action step, I will help you strategize a new approach. And like any coach, if I see that you aren’t giving it your best effort, I will help you get motivated!

How much does it cost? My health coaching programs and creatively fit coaching programs have different prices. See my Health Coaching  prices here and my Creatively Fit Coaching prices here.

What is Creatively Fit Coaching? Creatively Fit Coaching is a guided coaching program in which a certified Creatively Fit Coach teaches you how to use creative exercises like painting, drawing, and collage to improve your health by creating balance in mind, body, and spirit. Just like you would hit the gym to become physically fit, you can hit the canvas to become creatively fit.

Why should I become Creatively Fit? Creativity is a path to mindfulness and mindfulness is a path to better health! Engaging in creative exercises is one of the most effective (and fun!) paths to mindfulness, and that is why I am so excited to now offer Creatively Fit Coaching!  From my own healing journey, and from everything I have subsequently read and learned in school, I know that practicing mindfulness is a powerful healing tool. There are many ways to practice mindfulness. Most people think of the traditional practice of meditation: sitting cross-legged and chanting “Om.”  While that is an excellent practice, and something I can teach you, there are many other ways to achieve mindfulness, and I believe that creativity is the most fun!
